Once Jaimini, a disciple of sage Vedavyasa expressed his curiosity before Markandeya- 'O Lord! In the great epic Mahabharat, which was created by Vedavyasa, description of Dharma, Arth, Kama and Moksha appears to be intertwined at times and at other times, it appears to be separate from one another. Vedavyasa had described the norms, the stages and the means to perform the duties in all the four stages. This epic contains cryptic knowledge of Vedas. Hence O great sage! I have approached you in order to grasp the full knowledge contained in Mahabharat with your help. Why did Lord take human incarnation even though He is the cause of the origin, perpetuation and destruction of the universe? How did Draupadi become the wife of five Pandavas? How did Balaram expiate for the sin of killing a Brahmin? How did Draupadi's sons give up their lives? Kindly narrate all these things in detail. '

The Purana is divided into five distinct parts, namely :-

1. Chapters 1-9, in which Jaimini is referred by Markandeya to the wise Birds, and they directly explain to him the four questions that perplexed him and some connected matters.

2. Chapters 10-41, where, though Jaimini propounds further questions to the Birds and they nominally expound them, yet the real speakers are Sumati, nicknamed Jada, and his father.

3. Chapters 42-78: here, though Jaimini and the Birds are the nominal speakers, yet the real speakers are Markandeya and his disciple Kraustuki.

4. Chapters 79-90, the Devi-mahatmya, (popularly known as Durgasaptashati) a pure interpolation, in which the real speaker is a Rishi named Medhas, and which is only repeated by Markandeya.

5. Chapters 91-134, Markandeya and Kraustuki carry on their discourse. In the end, the Birds close here the long discourse delivered by Markandeya, and Jaimini thanks them and departs.

Hassan and Abdul

Last Friday, these two young men, Mohammed Hassan Ali bin Isa and Abdul-Jalil al-Arbash, died after stopping an suicide bomber dressed as a woman from entering a mosque in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Let us take a moment to appreciate what these two brave men did: knowing they would likely be blown to pieces, they went ahead and stopped the suicide bomber from killing even more people than he achieved. I don't know what would have gone on in their minds during their final moments:

1. the eyes of their mother giving them a lunchbox for school? 
2. Their fathers' broad smile when they made him feel proud? 
3. A sister's laughter? 
4. Their girlfriend's voice when they last had a fight and perhaps never knew that was their last conversation? 

I don't know. What I do know is that these men are heroes and examples for all of us, I hope their families have the courage and wisdom to make it through the grief quickly and painlessly. And I hope they can see that in this hour of unimaginable tragedy, strangers do appreciate what these heroes did, and we do care for them. Here is to Hassan and Abdul
